Living Boldly: Acknowledging and Overcoming Fear

God's Word for Today 1 Corinthians 11

June 27, 2012

Paul is establishing a chain of command. The word head here being the idea of authority. And so the husband is in authority over the wife. Christ is the authority over the husband. And God is the authority over Christ.  The Bible teaches that God made man first, and then from man formed the woman. When God looked at man and said, "It is not good that man should live alone," and so He made the woman from man that she might be a helpmeet for him.

God saw that man by himself could never make it, and so God said He created  the woman for the man.

In general women are weaker than men, in a physical sense.  It is a part of man’s role and responsibility to provide for and to protect his family.    I do not believe that God intends that a godly woman be under the authority of an ungodly man. Under the authority of man only as he is under the authority of Jesus Christ. God never meant marriage to be a slavery kind of a situation.  But women submit or yield to their husband as he submits to Christ.  It refers to marriage where the woman is to respond to the man. It is normal for the woman to be subject to the man in marriage. If a woman cannot look up to a man and respect him, she ought not to follow him and surely should not marry him.   He, in turn, must be the man who is willing to die for her -- "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it" (Ephesians 5:25).

Paul wrote about women’s dress and conduct in I Timothy 8    I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling;

9likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire,

10but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.

11Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness.

12I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.

13For Adam was formed first, then Eve;

14and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.

15Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

For more see
