God's Word for Today Barry and John Rom 8 Intro

March 24, 2012

Paul told us in chapter 7 that we are in a spiritual battle.  Now here in chapter 8 we see the Holy Spirit and His work of sanctification, that is, making us holy, making us more and more like Jesus, and giving us the power to live the Christian life. A life that is pleasing to God must be lived in the power of the Holy Spirit. He is the One who delivers the believer from the power of sin and performs God's will in the life of the believer. The Holy Spirit produces a life of obedience which the Law commanded but could not produce. The Holy Spirit furnishes the power; the decision is ours to surrender ourselves to the Holy Spirit.

The Law shows that we are guilty before God, we deserve condemnation but if we submit to the control of the Holy Spirit, we have good news, there is no condemnation.  Paul had felt the condemnation of the law. It had condemned him to death. Because he had violated that spiritual aspect of the law, though he had never committed adultery, yet he found that he desired his neighbor's wife and he realized that the desire was sin. Thou shall not desire your neighbor's wife or anything that belongs to your neighbor, and he had realized that he had violated that. He felt guilty, but now through the work of Jesus Christ he makes this wonderful statement:

No condemnation for those who are in Christ verses 1-4

1There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

2For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

3For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,

4in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. The Holy Spirit sets believers free from the power of sin, and we are not under the Law.  The law of the Spirit of life refers to the Holy Spirit. The law or principle of the Spirit of life proves stronger than the law or principle of sin and death.  The result of the Holy Spirit’s work is that you are set free from the law of sin and death.  The Law couldn’t save us, it couldn’t make us right with God, but Jesus Christ did. Now the Law cannot condemn us or control us.  Now we must not walk or live according to the flesh but live by the Spirit and live in the New Testament or Promise of God through our faith in Christ.  Sin still wants to control us but we have freedom from defeat and we are not under obligation to the old nature.  God accepts your faith in Christ, your love for Him, your desires to please and serve Him. And God has written His law in your heart, so now God directs and controls your desires, too if you yield and surrender to Him.  You have new life in the Spirit.
