God's Word for Today Romans chapter 1

February 22, 2012

The first 17 verses provide an introduction to the book.  The first seven verses are a salutation or greeting.  Then verses 8–13 is a prayer.  Then verses 16 and 17 Paul gives the theme of the book.  16For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

17For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

Usually in a letter today we sign our name at the end, but in Greek writing, the author’s name was given at the beginning.  Three things Paul says about himself – he is a servant of Jesus Christ, he is an Apostle, and he is set apart for God’s use.

I A servant

What does it mean to be a servant of Jesus Christ?  What is the status of a servant? The Greek word doulos is a slave.  A slave can’t leave, can’t quit.  A Roman slave, about 1/3 of the population, fell into two categories – field slaves and household slaves.  The field slaves were given little food and required to work very hard.  The household slave had better clothes, and had a relationship with the master, some were educated, even could read and write, where perhaps their master couldn’t. A Hebrew slave, was put in bondage because of debt.  They were freed after seven years, the Law of Moses allowed for a slave to remain as a slave for life if he or she chose to do so.  This is the kind of slave Paul describes, owned by the master, given over by choice.  The model Servant of the New Testament is the Lord Jesus.  God called Abraham His servant, Moses His servant, Joshua His servant, David His servant, Isaiah His servant, each one God called “My servant”.  Prophets and kings were called servants of the Lord.  In Isaiah the Messiah is presented as the suffering servant.  For more see www.wdbydana.com/sermon.html
