God's Word for Today
Acts 20

December 21, 2011

Eutychus is probably the first of many to fall asleep in church.  Paul’s preaching went on and on until midnight, Eutychus fell asleep and fell out the window was killed.  Thankfully God used Paul to raise him back to life.  I want you to notice that it was the first day of the week, that is Sunday, that they came together. Where we have a record of the day on which the early church met, it was always the first day of the week. Paul tells the Corinthians that they are to bring their gifts on the first day of the week The early church met on the first day of the week. That was the important day because it was the day when Jesus came back from the dead.

Paul was going to leave them the next day; so he preached all the way to midnight. Now, I do not know any congregation that would listen to me for hours and hours. However, this is Paul's last visit. He is getting ready to leave and he will not be back. This gives him an excuse to preach that long.   I sometimes would like to speak long, because there is so much in the wonderful Word of God! So yes, Eutychus fell asleep but I think the majority of the believers simply wanted to hear more and more from the Word of God.   The meeting continued until daybreak the next morning.  Luke adds that the purpose of the meeting was to break bread, that is to have a meal together and the Lord’s Supper.
