Rebuilding after the Fire
in Thachatchai

Last month I told you about the fire that burned 17
homes in a nearby community. I stopped by to see how they are doing
last week. They have distributed all of the food and clothing, and
with government aid are beginning to rebuild.

Planting Trees
I serve under the foreign Tourist Police
Volunteers,
but am often invited also to participate with the Thai Tourist Police
Volunteers who live in our village. One Saturday we joined with 51
young cadets in planting mangrove trees on the shoreline of a sea village on
the south east side of the island. We met first at a special education
school and then loaded up buses and cars and travelled to the village.
They greeted us with flower lays, for the dignitaries, and for some reason
thought I was one, and lots of ice water. It was an all day event.
I think we planted about 400 trees in the mud. The Moslem
community we served really appreciated all the volunteers coming, they
participated in the planting too and prepared a nice lunch.
We had 40 military police living in the Community Center for one week during
the ASEAN Summit. Five of the them attended church on Sunday.
Security was really beefed up on the island, there were soldiers and police
everywhere, with automatic weapons, riot gear, and there were multiple road
check points. Thankfully there were no problems.
Upcoming events
The national YWAM
Thailand annual conference is in
Krabi August 1 -4. Cindy and I
are looking forward to a time of
fellowship, worship, and some good
teaching. It is also a
changing of the guard, Sam Sarvis is
stepping down as National Director
and his assistant Phil Porter has
been chosen to replace him.
Our one year visas are expiring the end of August, so we
plan to fly to Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia August 24 -27 to apply
for new visas at the Thai Embassy there.
In mid September Calvary Chapel will have a SE Asia
missions conference in Hong Kong which we are hoping to attend and must make
our hotel reservations by August 14.
I am meeting monthly with the other Phuket pastors and
with a special committee to plan a large joint Christmas celebration.
I made some suggestions and then was asked to write out a drama script to
share a Christmas message. I wrote about a Thai family who comes into
a shopping mall and sees Santa and lots of shopping and then a school choir
singing Jingles Bells. The children in the family ask about each
scene, is this what Christmas is really about? Then there is a Baby
Jesus in the manger scene and the reading of Luke chapter 2 and the family
of four believes.
Happy Radio and God's Word for Today
More than a year
ago I was first invited to speak
regularly on a local radio station.
I hesitated because of my lack of
Thai fluency and frequently not
having a translator. We bought
our truck from the station owner and
he is a tourist police volunteer
whom I rode with to plant tress.
James from Myanmar came to visit us
and help for four days. While
he was with us, I revisited my
friend at the radio station, to
confirm dates and times and details
of what he would allow.
The program is called God's Word for
Today and airs every Saturday and
Sunday morning from 7:30 - 8:00 a.m.
We start with a song a bit of a
greeting and introduction and I then
share simply and informally from the
Word of God which James translated.
Gahn will normally translate for me
each week. This coming weekend
while we are gone to Krabi, I gave
the station two radio broadcasts
from J. Vernon Mc Gee that have been
nicely translated into Thai.
Thachatchai Community
Center Building Fund
We have a promised
donation of $1000 toward the building
projects. We still need some
additional donations for a
handicapped ramp, that should be
finished this month.. We also
still need an acoustic
tile ceiling, ten more mattresses, and to
build a partition wall separating men's
and women's sleeping quarters. Donations for the Thachatchai Community Center building project can be made to YWAM Montana
designate Thachatchai Community Center
Project number 3601501 Blacktail
Road Lakeside, Montana 59922 U.S.A note: this is
for the building not for our regular support, and will not be taxable income
for us.
Our Prayer Requests
Pray for the financial needs of
the Calvary Chapels in Ban Nam
Khem and Phuket. Last
month we personally had to
borrow $450 dollars to pay staff
and other church expenses.
Because Calvary Chapel Ban Nam
Khem could not support our
church as they normally do for
that amount. Ban Nam Khem
has had to cut staff salaries
there in half and cut back on
the area served by their Burmese
school.
Pray for the Lord's provision
for us to make our visa renewal
trip and to attend the Calvary
Chapel missions conference.
Praise the Lord for Cindy who
has been doing a fantastic job
preparing meals for Wednesday
and Sunday, and operating the
sound system and video
projector.
Praise the Lord three more kids
accepted Christ in Kid's Club!!
Pray for
funds to replace our video projector lamp which is growing very dim, and costs over
$200.
Pray for Cindy as she leads
worship with her guitar and
sings out in transliterated
Thai. Our two Thai Bible
students have gone across the
bridge to help Jum in her new
Burmese school.
Pray that Cindy will have more
opportunities to teach English
and disciple women.
Pray for Gahn as she translates
my teaching and preaching and
teaches Kid's Club on Saturdays
with Cindy. She also does
other outreach with the children
in our neighborhood.
Pray for the YWAM Thailand
national conference in Krabi
August 1 - 4
Pray for contacts made
throughout Phuket via the
internet, that people will be
receptive to the Gospel
Pray for our village of
Thachatchai, that many
more people will come to faith in Christ.
Pray for the recovery and rebuilding of the sea gypsy community
Pray for the Mallawong family who are raising mission support to be able to
join us soon.
Praise the Lord, the ASEAN Summit went well without protestors in Phuket
last month
Praise the Lord for the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Bangkok and other
Christians who came to visit
Praise the Lord many more Bibles have been given out free at the Se-Ed
bookstore
Thanks for partnership with us, we greatly appreciate your support through prayer and
