What is a Good
News Club?
Boys and girls ages
5 through 12 gather with their friends to sing interesting visualized
songs. They enjoy playing games that help them memorize a verse from
God's Word. Through the missionary time they learn of children around
the world who are following Jesus. The visualized Bible story applies
God's Word to what is happening in their lives. They play review games
that help them remember what was taught. An opportunity to receive Jesus
Christ as Savior is given. Activities that help them grow in Christ
are presented.
Where Does a Good
News Club Meet?
Good News Clubs meet
in the neighborhood where children live. We want to make it easy and
convenient for them to attend. They meet most often in the friendly
atmosphere of a home. This home can serve as a link between the church
and the child's home, bringing the good news right to where the child
lives. They can meet in a community center or most anywhere children
will gather together.
Who Teaches a Good
News Club?
Christians who are concerned
for boys and girls work together volunteering their time and energy
to teach Good News Clubs. They are trained by Child Evangelism Fellowship
to have a club that is exciting and informative so that children will
want to keep coming. Teachers are asked to sign the CEF® ® Statement
of Faith and agree to abide by the policies of the organization ( CEF®
is non charismatic).
What Can a Good
News Club do for My Neighborhood?
A Good News Club can
identify a home in the neighborhood that is safe for a child to go to
in time of trouble. It brings the teaching of biblical morality to his
neighborhood. It connects the child and his family to others where they
live developing a good community spirit. When you leave your home on
Sunday to go to church, others in your neighborhood know you are religious.
When you teach children in your neighborhood God's Word, your neighborhood
learns what you believe.

Millie Behrends
started teaching CEF Good News Clubs in Riverside shortly after
World War II, and then officially started the CEF of Greater
Riverside Chapter in 1953. Every time the chapter has been without
a director over the years, it has been Millie that kept things
going. We only have a chapter today because of Millie.
What's more, she NEVER grew old. She never got the attitude
many get "Well, I taught Sunday school twenty years ago, so I
did my time, and now everybody should leave me alone." No, she
served all her life, never stopping, never slowing. She has
been in perfect health for years (her drivers license is still valid
at age 90), until January of this year, when she sustained a mild
stroke. It was downhill from there. It was just one
thing after another. A week ago this past Saturday, I visited
Millie in her home, and we prayed together for a long time.
She shared much with me about the early days of CEF here, and gave
me valuable insights. She had been teaching the mentally
challenged adult Sunday school class at her church up until her
stroke in January, and since then she had been working more on her
writing, and preparing teaching materials for future teachers.
Her latest story, she shared, was about Peter sharing his testimony
about how he denied Christ, but was forgiven. It was that
story from Peter's viewpoint. Well, Millie never finished it.
Two days ago (November 1), Millie got to meet Peter face to face
(and maybe hear his testimony herself!). She passed from this
life into REAL LIFE. I am joyous for her. She was ready
to enter into the LORD's rest, see her husband and son again, and
see Jesus face to face. However, I am grieved for our loss.
Millie was not only an incredible example of a Christian worker, but
also a dear friend to me, and a piece of living history with many
wise insights about life. Her own life spanned almost the
entire 20th century, and she had many things to share. Please
pray for us as we attempt to carry on. Pray also for Millie's
family, particularly her daughter Tanya. Tanya is also
on our CEF committee, and much of the details have fallen to her.
Thank you! Forgive me for making this so long, but I do have
some important prayer/praise items below too.
-Janelle Heiden,
CEF of Greater Riverside
PRAISES:
*For God's provision.
*The children in Good News Clubs are
asking valid questions about the Bible and how it relates to things
going on in the world. There have been many teachable moments.
*Things seem to be moving forward to start
the club at Glen Ivy Trailer Park.
*I was able to sub for my coworker
Heather's training class last Saturday. I was blessed by the
presence of the teachers who are attempting to get an
after-school Good News Club at Lake Matthews Elementary School.
PRAYER REQUESTS:
*For the club at Lake Matthews Elementary
School. The principal of that school is "spiritual" but not a
Christian (she is more new age, from what I was told), and she used
a technicality to refuse to allow the Good News Club. The
Christian teachers at the school who want to start the Good News
Club, Thea van Gordan and Pam Volker, may have a solution to that
technicality, and they are going into her office to see her later
this week to discuss it. Please pray that the Lord goes with
them. This is a real battle for the hearts and souls of the
children.
*For Tanya, Millie's daughter, as she
deals with the inevitable details.
